New student orientation is an educational event around the world at the beginning of of the academic year of a university or other tertiary institution. Variety of events are held in orientation week to orient and welcome the new student.
There are varieties of student orientation’s name in some countries such as freshers’ week in England, Orientation week or O’week in Australia, Nollning (comes from word “noll”) in Sweden, and WOW (week of welcome) in United States.
We have student orientation week in Indonesia, we know it as “Masa Orientasi Siswa” or MOS, OSPEK, and the newest one is “Masa Orientasi Peserta Didik Baru” or MOPBD. When was the history of student orientation in Indonesia started ? The fact says that MOS came from a long time ago before the freedom of our country. It all started when the netherland government that time allowed the native inhabitants to go to their school, but of course the deutch students didn’t like the local students. They always tried to bully them and made them to feel uncomfortable. That things becomes a culture even after the 70th year of Indonesia independence day.
Like a proverb money can’t buy you happiness except when you spend it right, MOS also can’t give you benefits except when you do it right. Have we done it right ? Let’s compare the student orientation in other countries with our country. In university of melbourne, the new students spend their first week with some celebration such as famous band playing at the entertainment venue on campus and followed by partying and drinking. Other countries like Canada, New Zealand, Thailand, UK, US, and Denmark also have the same type of student orientation which is mostly ended with with alcohol fest that is a big sin iin our country. But based on en.wikipedia.org Thailand and Indonesia have a typical orientation that may consist of verbal harrasment as well as initation to humiliation.
So how do we do it right ? Based on Technical Guidelines of MOS (Student Orientation) or MOPDB (Orientation Students New) elementary, junior and senior high school / vocational school Academic Year 2014/2015 the school shoud do some event like : Insights of Wiyata Mandala, Awareness of Nation and State, Nationalism / Patriotism, Character building, The introduction of Curriculum 2013, socialization of Clean and Healthy Lifestyle (PHBS), Scouting activity and, Religious Mental coaching. For elementary school, first day of school is filled introduction to the environment, how to learn, and the cultivation of character formation in order to strengthen the spirit of nationalism, one of them in the form of memorizing the national songs.
There are also some optional event like : socialization of Impact of Smoking; Socialization of Effects of Drugs, HIV and AID'S; How to Learn Effectively; Art and Creativity Competition; Sports Competition; Settling with seniors / teachers / employees; Social activity / visit to orphanages / nursing / social rehabilitation, and social services; and The introduction of Extracurricular Activities.
Even when the government gives the rules for MOS the reality still not as well as the expectation. This year MOS gives another victim, a boy name Evan Christopher Situmorang died because of exhausting during the MOS event. MOS doesn’t encourage the students, it discourages them. And a system like this then the results can be easily suspected, like a low graduation rates, and even bad passing grades.
The recipients of the Nobel Prize can succeed not because they have a special teacher quality academically, but in fact have a very strong character, which is character building, rather than destructive. How Indonesia could have a Nobel prize winner if the student orientation system destruct the students ?
There are many problems that afflict (in education) in the country that we love, one of them is the implementation problems MOS, seniority seniors to juniors which doesn’t give any benefit at all, in fact the damage is very strong, then teachers less capable and mature in educating students. And there are still problems in education is the "homework" for the government and communities to resolve problems that are still numerous.
